My guilty pleasures

Announcement: I am getting married October this year~!
Amid the happy congratulatory wishes, I get awkward response like some who goes about commenting 'but you are so young, why so fast?' after which I swear they were checking out my tummy!! And yeah, not a good time to be my tummy since I had been on food binges earlier this year. So I do wonder how my tummy looks like to them. But I like to joke the reason why I wanted to get married so soon is cause I wanted kids soon, and then I tell these people, my kids would be older than their kids in school and can bully them because of what they say today. That usually shut them up. :)

There was this awkward moment when we told our friend we were getting married and this person preached to us about his philosophy on not marrying any time soon. It was pretty awkward, because firstly no one is asking about whether he is getting married or not, and secondly his phobia of commitment should not be imposed unto others. Then, the cricket started their orchestra

But anyhow, due to many reasons I am still enjoying my food binges. I tell myself I have until end of February, which is 29th, i.e. tomorrow!! until the start of my dieting!! I swear... ok, not swear la... I promise, I will get down to it~!

First, the chinese new year food...
Then valentine's day~!

How about those friend's visit and we had to have social drink (Little Creatures)??

And then for those foreign visitors, what better thing to try but kangaroo skewers?

O yeah, not forgetting the all time favourite chilli mussels~!

And lots and lots of meat~!

Chicken Parmigiana... fatty yet satisfying

Leederville's passionfruit cheesecake, I keep forgetting the name of the shop but I am in love with the cakes~!

Chocolate Marshmallow cheesecake?!?

Nutella Calzone with walnut and home made vanilla ice cream, yummy....
Seriously, who could resist? Sheesh... why they have to make sleeveless wedding gowns? and why must I have pretty friends? It will be oh-so-hard to outshine every single one of them on the night it matters the most~! Nah, just kidding. I can't wait for that day to come, so that I can quit this diet... omg... I am saying this before my diet even starts~! No seriously, will try my best to get fit and pretty for this upcoming event~! For all of you out there, enjoy 'em while you can~!

Till next time,
XOXO

My bro's visit and adventure along Swan Valley

I vividly recall the day I went to pick my brother from Perth's International Airport. It was supposed to be summer day but then that morning was pretty chilly and the wind was so strong. Several times, I had to remind myself to slow down as I could feel the force of the wind blowing against my car. The time then was 5:30 a.m. when I took the parking ticket from the machine and parked my little hatchback. My bro was supposed to touch down at 5:20 and allowing about 10-20 minutes of custom and security checks, I was on time.

However, I waited and I waited and I waited.... but still I see no bro. I was pretty sure at this stage, my bro might be stuck at the quarantine check. As I waited, images from Border Security appeared one after another in my head. I'd imagined my brother had accidentally slipped in fresh food and was now crying as the officers write him a penalty fine. And as I waited longer, I somehow imagined this elaborate situation where some drug dealer had slipped something into his bag and now he was caught and perhaps the officers did not understand his english... omg... and was now planning to deport him or arrest him or something and I am still waiting for him here. I know it sounded kinda far fetched but there was no announcement on whether the flight was delayed or whether anything was amiss, I could only presume that the delay was due to the quarantine check.

After waiting like an idiot for an hour, I called home just to check whether I had in fact woken up with a blur brain and mixed up today for tomorrow or something stupid like that. But no one answered the phone. It was then I saw some Malaysian faces coming out of the arrival hall and I decided to wait a bit longer. Luckily, everything went alright as I finally caught a glance of my brother. It turns out the wind had prevented the aircraft from making its first landing, hence they had to circle in the air one more time before attempting a second landing. As my bro recounted the episode, he mentioned an old man nearby who was praying aloud and how when they finally landed, everyone clapped. And there I felt guilty for thinking murderous and angry thoughts about the quarantine officers who I thought was delaying everything. Oops...

In the weekend, we went for a short road trip down swan valley with some of my friends. It was a beautiful trip~! The first stop was the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, because we were hungry and wanted free chocolate pastilles ~! I know everyone come to this place whenever they visit Swan Valley or Margaret River and everyone was like raving about the chocolates they produced. Perhaps I am not a die hard fan of chocolates, these weren't my absolute favorite. I still prefer Haigh's chocolate... yummy... However, I did noticed that some of their gourmet chocolates won gold and silver medals from the Perth Royal show. So for those who love their chocolates, good news~! They are opening a store in City in March~!
Cookies and creams, are you here? Chocolates and chocolates...

Opening in a store near Hay Street in March

Another place that I just think tourists should not miss is the Caversham Wild life Park, it is just very close to Swan Valley. We dropped by the place to have a tour of the wild life park, it is quite different than the zoo I visited previously. Don't ever forget your student ID, it got us $5 discount. Good enough to buy some cold drinks afterwards or maybe a pie. What made the wild life park stood out from the Perth's zoo was the animal shows and the picture taking sessions. You can get real close and personal with the animals.

Emo kangaroo...

Sleeping owl... I can touch you~!

I didn't understand this but the animals absolutely love my younger bro, they kept crowding around him even though there are other ppl with food in their hands as well. Apparently not me, I have the camera in my hand~!

They put their paws on his shorts, and he was telling me how gross while my friends was going 'aw...'

Mr. Wombat or wait, maybe it was Mrs.

Not forgetting this cute Cockatoo, it was dancing around by swinging its head sideways. The caretaker mentioned that the bird is a bit show off...but I say 'Bust those moves, pink cockatoo~! you only live once~!'

We also went to take a look at the koalas. As I listened to the person telling us how koalas only eats eucalyptus leaves and how they will not eat the leaves if it has the scent of a human, how their teeth does not constantly grow but get grinds down by the eating process and in the end they may starve as they do not have teeth to eat, how the eucalyptus leaves only contained about 2% protein which isn't much energy anyway and they need about 18-22 hours of sleep each day or else they will get stressed and sick easily and maybe die. As I listened, I couldn't help thinking how it seems they are designed to be extinct at some point. It is such a pitiful sight. Then it gets me thinking, they used to be abundant in the old days, right? Does that mean life is easier in the old days than they are now? A-ha~!
There were lotsa animals in there, such as camels, emus, cows, lambs, sheep, goats, wallabies, dingos, fox and lots and lots of kangaroos. I can't help notice that there are ducks everywhere, in the kangaroo enclosure, ducks. In the wallabies enclosure, ducks again. Initially, I couldn't spot the wallabies and I could only see the duck and so I joked to my bro that it must be a wallaby duck~! In the black swan enclosure, ducks again~! Everywhere, I see ducks, except the crocodile, snake, dingos and fox's enclosure for sure la~! The fox's and dingo's enclosure had electric fence, for goodness sake~! Then I noticed that the ducks were eating the leftover food from the animals~! They even swallow the huge pellets meant for the kangaroos, WHAT? So the ducks were reared as means to control the food wastage?? so they eat almost anything? Gross...

Another interesting event was the farm show, where they showed how to shear the sheep, how the dogs herd the sheep and how they crack a whip. The sharp sound that was emitted when you crack a whip was apparently a small sonic boom, can you imagine that? Sounds cool.. Apparently you swirl the whip a few times, getting faster and faster and then you change the direction of the swirl really fast and the tip of the whip surpasses the speed of sound, thereby SONIC BOOM~! The presenter made it look easy, but the volunteers couldn't quite get it right. Initially I was shy to try, but when I see even aussie from the audience couldn't get it right, I felt less shy and wanted to get it a try but then I missed the opportunity... Aw, man...

Btw, they also let audience try a chance milking the cow. Except the cow suddenly had the urge to pee and it was so funny to see like a hose of chrysanthemum tea just gushed out... Gross.... See, I am nice, I did not take such an ugly pic for everyone to gag...

Looking at the ducks sure made me hungry. We stopped at the Edgecombe Brothers for lunch. They are famous for their asparagus which is fresh and soft. And their tasting plate is pretty nice but other than that, I felt that their menu choices were quite limited.

While visiting the Swan Valley Art Gallery, a dog took a liking to my brother. He was HUGE~!  And he decided to tag along us for fun. We were initially scared of it, you never know what is going through his HUGE head and we couldn't see his owner anyway. But the dog was pretty tame and seemed playful. I was so happy that I managed to play fetch with this dog except the dog didn't really give me back the stick, he proceeded to chew it to small bits. Is he trying to signal me something? Hmm...

Looks like palm trees...
Art, art and away...

Don't forget to visit the vineyard, such a beautiful and romantic setting~!

Moments before we arrived, there was a wedding going on here. I bet it was a beautiful and joyous moment.

Such a beautiful setting...

Free roses, anyone?
There are plenty more to see in Swan Valley, such as the Yahava coffee place and the honey makers but we were too busy having fun to finish all those places. Perhaps another time~!

Till then,
XOXO

To My Valentine

Dear Valentine,

Can you imagine that it has been 11 years since we first lay eyes on each other?  My sister once said that we would hit it off straight away, that we had a lot of things in common. Perhaps God had other plans for us, for we seemed to have much in common, but we are like two brick who would not stick then. During that time, I really appreciated your friendship and your company.

When you told me you love me 7 years and 7 months ago, your words knocked me off my chair. If you had any doubts on how these words would impact the dynamics of our friendship then, I hope our first kiss sealed the deal.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you...
Thank you for taking the time and effort listening to my long winded opinions, wishes and dreams. Sometimes,   I would rant about wishing for a new watch. The next thing I know, you bought the exact model and colour I mentioned briefly as I passed the display window.
But that is not what I currently have in mind.
Ever since I saw an advertisement of a ferrero rocher's bouquet, I have been obsessed with the idea of it. But that was a LONG time ago and I forgot about it, along with my new year resolution and my many passwords. But apparently, you didn't...
It is not Ferrero Rocher's chocolate, but it is alright. I don't really fancy any particular chocolates anyway. It was the whole concept that I like. :P

If you enter into this relationship because you'd imagined that you will get this beautiful and smart girlfriend,

I just want to thank you for sticking it through with me, especially through the bad times. The bad hair days, the mood swings, my failures, embarrassment and sick days.

This one is for you, I love you~!

Happy Valentine's day~!

Valentine's day is coming up really soon~! I wasn't particularly conscious of the date but thanks to the ads and social network, I am very aware. Thank you so very much, I really don't know what my life would have been without knowing this bit of information. *sarcastic*

Valentine's day has grown from a humble day to appreciate our partner to a ridiculous and extravagant built up of expectation. And I am saying this even though I am in a relationship! I am not an anti-romance kinda person but perhaps a die hard romantic at heart. If a pair of lover are happy together, valentine's day would be almost another day in their calendar. You won't wait until valentine's day to give flowers, would you? You won't wait for valentine's day to buy something really nice for your partner, would you? How about looking them in the eye and telling them that you love them? That goes without saying, right?

What I am trying to say is that if you are happy, everyday would be a valentine's day. With or without the roses and the chocolates. (cause I am not really a fan of bouquets or chocolates)

But to actually set aside a day and say 'hey, you guys gotta spend the day together ridiculously happy!' is a bit pushing it for me. This year is the second time in our relationship that we are apart. Honestly, I don't feel that self-pity that so often befalls me. So what if he doesn't lavish me with expensive gifts? So what if he is not able to make it? So what if we don't share dinner? It doesn't matter. We spent most of our time awesomely to reaffirmed to me that he is the One. When my friend asked me what we are doing on valentine's day, I told them nothing as we will be apart. Then she went into all sympathy mode and started her cooing voice.

It was then the crickets decided to start their symphony.... #ThatAwkwardMoment.... *poker face*

That kinda sucks. The stress of being happy together on this particular day robs me of what really matters.

It is very hard to describe how it feels to be in a relationship for 7 years~! Once, I told my friend that we have been together for 7 years, she was shocked. She had known her husband for 2 years before getting to married and later having a daughter, now aged 5. Yes, that is exactly what 7 years could have been for us. Probably a baby and maybe a dog too... My friend told me, '7 years? You should break up and be with more guys before you settle down.'

And I did the cereal puking action, except there is no cereal inside my mouth.

Perhaps she doesn't know that commitment is not because I do not have anybody else to choose rather I do not WANT anybody else. Even though the world may seemed like a buffet table for some, I don't want to eat till I puke.

I remember the day I picked up my hubby at the airport, I didn't know how I would feel or act after living without him for such a long time. Would we be distant? Would we need to re-established our past intimacy and trust? It felt weird to say that as we have been together so long, but it is true. Would I still love him the way I have always did? While I was fretting about all this questions, I spotted a face in the crowd. I didn't recognize at first, but I was attracted to him instantly. I almost looked away when the other person waved, before I realized it was my hubby all this time.

Love is such a beautiful feeling, so don't just do something special on Valentine's day, every other day deserved our attention as well. Happy Valentine's day to every single person and couples in love~!

On Forgiveness and possible amnesia

I have always heard of the term 'forgive and forget', but are they the one and the same? Does forgiving someone means you totally forget what they do? Or does forgetting what they do means forgiving them? In that way, it is better to develop selective amnesia, is it not?

From the simplest thing of people misplacing my stuff to betrayal and disappointment, every day is another test of patience and forgiveness. Like so often heard...

To err is human...

When I get angry, it is like eating spicy curry, I feel hot in my belly and I wanna go 'FUUUU...' I wanted to give the other person a piece of my mind. Scold them, give them cold shoulder, or bite them, it seems a lot of petty actions are justifiable just to get back at them. I once heard an old man grumbled to his wife that the person he was angry at, deserved his anger at its full glory. I wish this is a case of the older the wiser. But I found that to be quite untrue. Being angry is like blowing up a balloon in your head, you may think you are right with  all the logic in the world, but the 'balloon' makes you lightheaded which impairs thinking process.

When we are angry, our inner condition reflects on our outer condition. We frowned, we pursed our lips, we fold our hands and sometimes that telltale nerve starts twitching. What it only does is make us look ugly, and when we look ugly we feel ugly, and when we feel ugly we look ugly. Depending on how good you are at being angry, you may even grow a pimple or two.

But is it all worth it? When I get angry, my heart beat increased and my breathing becomes rapid, all this requires energy. Hence, why waste energy being angry over someone apparently not worth your effort? You being angry is not detrimental to the other person, unless you land your fist on his body part, but also detrimental to you. You waste your energy, your time and your health thinking and festering about things that may not be worth it.

When you choose to forgive someone, it is not them you are doing a favor to, it is you yourself. It is my experience that when I choose to forgive someone, that huge balloon in my head slowly releases gas and relief wash over my whole self, or that heavyweight in my heart just instantly gets lifted. A smile breaks through the face, and I feel beautiful once again.

But it is not always an easy step to choose to forgive the other person, right? I know there are plenty articles out there on forgiveness but I like to share some of mine.  Like said...

To err is human, to forgive divine.

There is one quote from Oprah that goes :

Forgiveness is accepting the fact there is nothing you can do to change the past.

For example, your friend betrayed you and you found out about it. The fact is that it is all in the past. You can choose to learn your lesson from there cause there is nothing you can do to change the past. Forgiveness does not mean she is once again welcome back with open arms into your life as best friend, I believe that once trust is broken it takes a long time to repair not words. But forgiveness means choosing to overlook the incident, perhaps you now know a better way of dealing with her. Alternatively you can choose to dedicate your life to the destruction of your friend's life, like the movie so promote, but who is the loser in the end? Your friend's betrayal may be a small dot in your life, but choosing to focus on it and let it take over your life, you are choosing to make that small dot your black hole.

Take a breath, say a prayer and choose to let it go. I come to realize that one way helps me forgive is by saying it out loud. Words are very powerful tool indeed. They say if you want to learn more effectively, use more senses, e.g. read aloud and looking at the pictures helps the brain absorb information faster. Hence, by saying affirmatively that you forgive a person, your brain will process this information. Although at first you may struggle with it, do this a few times and it slowly sinks it. It is amazing. It may not necessarily means you should tell the other person, but sometimes that helps as well.

One very important thing to remember is to also forgive yourself. Wth am I talking about? An example is a cheating partner or spouse. I came to realize during the heartbroken phase, the person who was hurt would say 'I couldn't believe he did this to me!' or  'How did I not know?' All this is because unconsciously, the person blame themselves for loving and trusting this bastard. They would hate and blame themselves for hurting themselves, hence once broken up, they hop onto the nearest person who could love them the way they couldn't do themselves. Sounds familiar? I thought so. That is why it is important in such an example to not only forgive the bastard for what he did, but also forgiving yourself.

For me, forgiving is not about forgetting that it ever happened, rather it is choosing to let go the pain and suffering that the incident inflicted on me. :)

Summer skincare 2 (Review for moisturizer and lotion)

What is the first thing that pops into mind when you experienced dry, tight or flaking skin? Needless to say, it is moisturizer~! Healthy and moisturized skin are plumped up and less susceptible to wrinkles and sagging~! No wonder after the whitening craze in Japan, they are now going gaga over moisturizing~!

If you think moisturizing is only for a certain skin type then you are wrong. My recent reads revealed that even oily skin may be just as dry underneath. In some of these cases, oily skin types will secrete more oil to conserve the moisture of the skin cells. Hence, the person will suffer shiny and oily skin complexion and may even blot with oil blotters. Oil blotters remove the outer layer of the oil which conserves the moisture, leaving the skin dry and vulnerable. The last thing on their mind is the moisturizer. Hence, oily skin --> dry --> secrete more oil --> oily --> would not apply moisturizer --> dry -->... you get the picture. What is needed is a healthy oil to moisture balance~!

But I am not going to delve too deep, my purpose is to go gaga over skincare products and then review 'em. First of all, Moisturizer~!
  • L'oreal HYDRAFRESH All Day Hydration Supply Aqua-Milky Emulsion

Price : RMB 140 at Guardian Nanjing
Content : 150 ml
Manufactured in : China
Comment : The texture is pinkish white and it smells like faint rose syrup and milk drink (a.k.a. air bandung). I purchased this in China and I could not find the same packaging elsewhere. I noted that those sold in Malaysia and Singapore are produced either in Indonesia or Philippines and am not sure of the formula consistency. But I really recommend this one. I used to suffer from white dry patches around the mouth, and when I first bought this, I kinda doubt the efficacy as it is slightly runny, but it blends and absorbs without fuss and white patches are no more~! This product is great to use in the morning, and even though I believe that I have a big face, it lasted me full one year. It wasn't oily for my dry/combination skin, even when I used it in a humid country like Malaysia and Singapore. I would recommend this to oily/combination and dry/combination skin but if you have dry skin type, might not your cup of tea. Though I believe that there is a current trend... a-hem... for a certain Japanese emulsion, I fell hopelessly in love with the pinkish tint and the smell. Now... to find the right victim to help me purchase it in China...
  • Hadolabo GOKUJYUN moisturising cream (A$13.30 at sasa.com)

Price : A$13.30 at Sasa.com
Content : 50g
Manufactured in : Japan
Description : Hadalabo GOKUJYUN Moisturising Cream is infused with super hyaluronic acid which deeply penetrates into skin. It keeps on moisturizing and replenishing skin, meanwhile enhancing skin's water-binding ability, leaving skin supple, smooth and radiant. The gel texture helps to further nourish skin. Weak acid, no fragrance, no colorant, no oil and is alcohol-free.
Comment: So this is the ahem... I mentioned. The texture of the cream isn't thick, slightly runny but it does it work fine. There are no smell associated with it as it contains no fragrance and colorant anyway. And a small pea size was enough for my big face. I started off with lathering a lot on my face and my hubby was grossed out by the shine, so... a little goes a long way. As the product is oil free and alcohol free, it seems great for sensitive skin and really soothes the skin after a sun burn and shave burns. Over all, definitely worth the price.

2. Lotion

  • Kose sekkisei lotion

Price: $44.60 in sasa.com
Content : 200 ml
Manufactured in : Japan
Comment : I love this. It took a while for me to warm up to this product as the first smell that hit me was the smell of alcohol. But I do have to iterate, my nose is kinda picky. For some who may think, why need lotion? Great~! I just found out a simple trick to know the usefulness of lotion. Dab some lotion onto a cotton pad and wipe it on the back of your left hand (or perhaps you prefer to just rub it in with your hand), and leave the back of the other hand bare. Now dab serum on top of both of your hand backs. I noted that the one with the lotion just got absorbed faster and evenly~! So this lotion is great to prep the skin for the next stage of skincare, whether it is emulsion or serum or moisturizer~! The other reason I love this is the mild whitening properties and the soothing effect it had on the skin. I used it as a form of mask after a long sun exposure, and my skin instantly felt hydrated and less irritated. No wonder, it is one of the bestseller in Japan~! Not too sure whether it is suitable for sensitive skin as it contains alcohol.

Okie, that is all from me this week. I am trying to finish my summer skincare reviews before the summer is over. But there are so many distractions around. Just this week, someone introduced me hand made masks and organic skincare, I was hooked. Luckily I had the sanity to stop at just two products, will review it soon.

Till then, have fun and God bless~!

Gift

One of the beauty of a gift is not in the worldly value of a gift but on the heart that comes with the present. I realize that the gifts I received are not those that I could not afford by myself, but the fact that I loved and appreciated it even more was the thought of the person who gave it. Whenever I looked at these gifts, I find it hard not to giggle and smirked like an idiot.

A gift from my one and only younger sister. Doesn't it makes you wanna tear?

Gift from my friend, love it so much..
But I found that I like this second gift more... :)

Thank you all for the thoughtful gifts. :)
